Is DL Right for Me?
Distance Learning courses are best suited for self-motivated students who are comfortable with independent learning. Before signing up for a Distance Learning course, you should ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I have strong reading and writing skills?
- Do I feel comfortable expressing my ideas, comments, and questions in writing?
- Do I feel that I can learn without face-to-face interaction with my instructor?
- Can I dedicate the same amount of time to this course as I would a classroom-based course?
- Do I have the time management skills to balance the workload?
- Do I feel comfortable using technology (web browser, e-mail, word processor, etc.) to complete my coursework?
If you can comfortably answer yes to each of these questions, and can use a web browser, send and receive attachments with your VCCS email account, and use a word processor, then a Distance Learning course may be right for you!

System Requirements
The following requirements are highly recommended. While slower processors and RAM may be functional, you may find using them unpleasant.
Hardware recommendations
- 1 GHz Pentium processor
- 128 MB RAM or higher
- 56K modem, cable modem, or DSL
- Windows 2000 or higher
- RELIABLE Internet Service Provider (ISP)
- If using a Mac: PowerMac G3 or higher, OS 8.1 or higher
It is extremely important that you have a reliable ISP, especially if your course requires that you take tests online. If your ISP tends to drop your connection, you may have to retake tests.
Software recommendations
- Web browser: Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, Netscape 6.0 or higher, or Mozilla Firefox.
- VCCS Student e-mail and Blackboard account.
- Microsoft Word (2000 or higher)
- Adobe Reader
- Additional software as required by course instructor
